About The OpenArsenic Project
OpenArsenic is an open-source arsenic detection platform designed to make arsenic monitoring more accessible, affordable, and transparent. The system combines low-cost electrochemical hardware, open-source software, and comprehensive documentation to enable arsenic measurements in groundwater without requiring expensive laboratory equipment or highly specialized analytical expertise.
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can be present in groundwater throughout the world. In some aquifers, geological conditions result in elevated arsenic concentrations that may pose significant risks to human health. Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water has been associated with a range of adverse health effects, including: skin lesions, cardiovascular disease, developmental effects and various forms of cancer. Because arsenic is typically colorless, odorless, and tasteless when dissolved in water, contamination often goes unnoticed without analytical testing.
In many communities, arsenic contamination of groundwater poses a serious threat to human health, yet testing remains infrequent due to the high costs associated with conventional laboratory analysis.
OpenArsenic aims to reduce barriers to reliable arsenic testing by providing a complete analytical platform that can be assembled, operated, modified, and improved by users themselves.
All major components of the system—including the hardware, software, and analytical procedures—are openly documented and available to the community. Importantly, prior experience with electrochemistry is not required. The OpenArsenic platform was specifically designed to lower the barriers associated with electrochemical measurements and to enable new users to perform arsenic analyses after appropriate training and familiarization with the documentation. While the system can be used by experienced electrochemists, it was developed primarily with non-specialist users in mind. Potential users include non-governmental organizations (NGOs), water utilities, community water operators, environmental laboratories, universities and educational institutions, citizen science initiatives, researchers and students.
OpenArsenic development guiding principles
| Principle | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Accessibility | The system should be affordable and accessible to organizations that may not have access to advanced laboratory infrastructure. |
| Transparency | Users should be able to understand how measurements are performed and how concentrations are calculated. |
| Reproducibility | The method should provide reliable and reproducible results when operated according to documented procedures. |
| Open Source Development | Hardware designs, software, and documentation should remain openly available whenever possible. |
| Continuous Improvement | User feedback is considered an essential part of the development process. Documentation, software, and analytical procedures are expected to evolve as additional experience is gained. |
