Part 1: Welcome to OpenArsenic

A brief introduction to the guide and expected users.

Part 1: Welcome to OpenArsenic

OpenArsenic is an open-source arsenic measurement project designed to make accurate arsenic concentration testing more affordable, accessible, and transparent. OpenArsenic allows users to measure arsenic in water using electrochemistry. No prior experience is required.

Terminology used in this guide
OpenArsenic = the complete arsenic measurement platform.
OpenVoltam = the software used for data acquisition, peak analysis, and concentration calculation.
Rodeostat = the potentiostat used to control the electrochemical measurement.

1.1 What this guide is for

This guide is designed to help new users get started as quickly as possible. The goal is not to explain every detail of electrochemistry. The goal is to help  the user prepare the system, condition the electrode, run a sample, perform standard additions, analyze the peaks, calculate the arsenic concentration, and decide whether the result is trustworthy.

1.2 What this guide is not

  • It is not a complete electrochemistry textbook.
  • It is not the full software reference manual.
  • It is not the advanced method development guide.
  • It is not a replacement for local laboratory safety rules.

1.3 Expected user profile

This guide is written for users who have an interest in arsenic monitoring and a reason to measure arsenic in water samples. A science background is helpful but not required. Prior experience with voltammetry, electrochemistry, or laboratory analysis is not required.
