Part 14. Steps at the end of measurements
Proper cleaning and storage of the OpenArsenic system helps maintain measurement performance.
Proper cleaning and storage of the OpenArsenic system helps maintain measurement performance, extend electrode lifetime and prevent contamination. The following procedure is recommended at the end of each measurement session.
14.1 Save and review your data
Before disassembling the system verify that all runs have been saved and that the peak analysis has been completed. Export results if required and make sure that calculations have been saved.
14.2 Cleaning the electrochemical cell
Carefully remove the measurement solution from the electrochemical cell and dispose of solutions according to local laboratory procedures. Do not leave samples in the electrochemical cell between measurement sessions.
Rinse the electrochemical cell thoroughly using deionized water. We recommend filling the empty cell with DI, swirl gently and discard the rinse water. Repeat 3 times and inspect the cell for any remaining residues or visual contaminants. While cleaning and rinsing, hold the stir bar in place with a larger magnet underneath the cell.
14.3 Cleaning the electrodes
The gold microwire is the most sensitive component of the system. Rinse with DI water and inspect visually, avoid touching the gold wire. The electrode should generally be stored clean and dry between measurement sessions. However, if you expect to do more measurements in the near future (within a week), you can leave the electrodes in the cell filled with DI.
The reference electrode should be rinsed with DI. Inspect for air bubbles in the electrolyte solution, if they occur: gently tap on the electrode so that the air bubbles flow upwards. If that does not solve it, consider refilling the 3M KCl solution. Also verify that sufficient 3 M KCl remains to avoid the electrode from drying out. Rinse the counter electrode with DI and inspect for visual contamination.
14.4 Turning off the hardware
After cleaning
- Close OpenVoltam
- Disconnect the Rodeostat if desired.
- Turn off the stirrer.
- Turn off the relay.
- Disconnect power supplies if required.
- Verify that all equipment is safely powered down.
14.5 Organize and put away reagents and sample bottles
Ensure that all reagent bottles are closed and clearly labelled. Sort out the waste containers and dispose of the waste water following local guidelines. Store samples in the fridge.
